with the champions: Pagliuca e Ventola
Gazzetta dello Sport, 29/07/1999
FOR VENTOLA Dear Nick, I am from Bari, like you. Do you intend
to return to Bari in a few years, or at the end of your career?
Also, I want to buy you in Fantacalcio with my friends, can
you assure me that you will score at least 15 goals at Bologna?
Last year I had you on my team, and instead of putting you in
the starting line-up, I put Montella. You scored at Bologna,
Montella didn¹t, and I lost Fantacalcio by a point and
a half. Giuseppe Pastore ()
Of
course I would like to do better than last year, when I scored
11 goals, it would not be good to get less than ten! Even Pagliuca
returned home after a while, be patient, and maybe I will come
back to Bari.
Pagliuca
Hello Gianluca, as a Milan fan I confess that I am happy that
you will not be defending the Inter goal anymore. You had worked
dozens of miracles at Inter, often stoking the envy of Milan
fans. As far as goalkeepers go, our team has got it right perhaps
only this year. I wish you luck at Bologna, which you did not
have at Inter or in the National team. I don't know if you can
respond to this question: did you leave Inter only because Peruzzi
is better in coming forward off the line (which Lippi likes)
or is there something else?
Marco (marco.bertolasi@stpauls.it)
There
is something else!
Hello
Gianluca, how do you feel about defending your goal in front of
the opposing grandstand? Do you manage to avoid being distracted,
not to think of the danger of some violent gesture?
Luca (Luca_34@hotmail)
There
is no distraction. Rather, the pressure of the fans and, sometimes,
their insults spur you on even more than when you are playing
in front of your own grandstand.
Pagliuca
I would like to know why every time that you won a derby (the
few that you did!!!) you went in front of the opposing grandstand
to celebrate??? Isn't that inciting violence?
Angelo Luatti (edm@edm2.it)
Only
once did I go over to celebrate, together with a teammate, in
front of the opposing grandstand: I was taking it out on them
after having been bombarded by oranges. However I would like
to point out that I did not lose a single derby in the championship.
per
Gianluca:Bologna is your city, wouldn't you have preferred to
return here at the end of your career? Do you think that you could
still carry the weight of the National team?
Yakko (Vignola, MO) (giacco@misterweb.it)
I
am 32 years old, in great physical shape, and I think I still
have a few good seasons ahead of me. In the national team the
coach has chosen to give space to the younger players, so the
door is now closed. Bergomi came back in when he seemed to be
out of the loop already, but the competition for the position
of goalkeeper is really too strong.
Pagliuca
I would like to know the motives of your 'banishment' from the
national team and from Inter. Do you think they were disciplinary
measures???
Davide (pmg@daisy.gass.it)
I
have already answered about the national team. As for Inter,
you would need to ask those who have banished me and have still
not provided any explanation.
forza
bologna....
Hello, great Pagliuca, and great Nicola, I can't wait for the
championship to start, I hope to see a great Bologna, with the
acquisition of both of you it should be a super Bologna in the
UEFA Cup, ... if one day you come to Caracas, Venezuela, remember
to come and eat at the best restaurant in Venezuela, you will
be guests of honor..... Hello to everyone, good luck.... Max....
massimo serra (mezzanotte@facilnet.com)
We
are also curious to start the championship: all the prerequisites
to do really well are there. We are also curious about your
restaurant!
Europa...
Europe... At least here [at Bologna] you will be able to go all
over Europe, while Inter... Antonioli and Andersson will always
remain in our hearts, but you are there also already!!! It would
be fantastic to improve on the results of last year in the three
competitions, what do you think about that?
Alberto Arioli (03356337524@posta.tim.it)
Pagliuca
answers: 'It is difficult to improve upon what was done last
year. Let's say that it would be wonderful to manage to go all
the way in at least one of the cups - the Italian Cup and the
UEFA Cup, and to repeat the 7th-8th place in the championship'.
Ventola answers: 'I don't know how far we can go, but I am certain
that many others will have to watch out for us. We are very
competitive'.
Bittersweet... Dear Gianluca and Nicola, what was the best moment
and the worst moment of your careers?
Mirco Mariotti (geybfm@tin.it)
Pagliuca:
'Winning the scudetto with Sampdoria was the best; losing the
final of USA '94 on penalties was the worst'.
Ventola: 'The best was the final of the Mediterranean Games
and being promoted to Serie A with Bari; the worst and most
painful moment was the injury to my knee, November 2 1997'.
Dear
Pagliuca, how will you feel when you come into Meazza to face
Inter, which obviously will win with 3 goals from Vieri?
Mauro Manca (lazy@hardnet1.net)
I
don¹t know how I will react, I will certainly feel moved...
O.k. for 3 goals from Vieri, but we¹ll score 4!!
Give
an evaluation of Bologna, as compared to the Inter team of last
season.
Federico (fedebat@iol.it)
Pagliuca:
'Last year at Inter we had the obligation to win, and we all
know how that ended. Here there is less pressure, but the obligation
to do well is still with us.'
Ventola: 'The situation is obviously different, but from what
I have seen up to now, the new Bologna does not have to envy
anyone much...'
For
Pagliuca and Ventola Hello, I am a fan of Juve, but I love all
soccer, and I'd like to ask you one thing: is it a good idea to
buy you both in fantacalcio?
Daniele iemmi (daniemmi@tin.it)
In
unison: YES
Honestly,
is it true that Inter's problem was in the locker room, or was
there something else underneath? Is it also true that you kind
of boycotted all coaches last season except for SIMONI? Do you
think you have been sacrificed because you don't mince your words?
Thank you.
Gianluca EPICOCO (epicoco@tin.it)
Pagliuca:
'Perhaps Simeone, Bergomi and I were dismissed because in difficult
moments we had said what we thought. We have defended everyone,
including the coaches, in an intolerable situation. In hindsight,
perhaps we would have done better to keep a lower profile, but
it seemed right to us to do this because we were in some degree
the symbols of the team'.
Ventola: 'Things were going badly and the club chose to change
coaches several times. There was absolutely no boycotting'.
Ventola, last year Inter gave Recoba on loan and you this year
as joint property. Did the Inter managers believe more in Chino
than in you or did Bologna ask for joint property? Pagliuca,
you have always been number one in your position, even if you
have not won what you deserved.
antico aldo (anticoa@hotmail.com)
Ventola:
'Joint property was chosen by both clubs. As for Recoba, he
did well, and he earned the right to return to Inter via the
front door'.
Pagliuca: 'Thank you for the compliments. It is nice to win,
but it is not all: I am happy with what I have done so far and
the various achievements that I can claim as my own'.
forza ragazzi
Is Bologna strengthened by the acquisition of Inter players
(Inter eliminated in the UEFA playoffs)? Pagliuca: will Virtus
(basketball) win the championship again? Ventola: you won¹t
do like Baggio? Will you be like Signori, and stay with us,
no matter how the championship goes? It will go well, you are
strong. Forza Bologna.
emidio (freddi@mercurio.it)
Pagliuca:
'Let's hope so. Kinder has changed a lot, but the presence of
a coach like Messina and [a player like] Danilovic are nice
guarantees.'
Ventola: 'It is too soon to talk about my future. We have a
whole championship ahead of us and the issue of joint property
to resolve. Certainly my opinion will have an influence'.
I am from Bologna, and have 'emigrated' to China, so I have
some difficulty following the current situation at Bologna.
I would just like to know if you are happy playing at Bologna
and what is the condition of the great Fontolan. If possible,
let me know if there is an official web site of Bologna. I wish
good luck and thank you.
Fabio Rappini (asiaworl@pub3.fz.fj.cn)
Pagliuca
and Ventola: 'We are both very happy to be playing at Bologna,
no question! Fontolan is doing pretty well, he is coming back
gradually.' The official site of Bologna is http://www.bolognafc.it
Hello
Gianluca,
my name is Corrado, and I am a great admirer of yours. The question
I would like to ask you is the following: seeing how Bologna,
the team as well as the city, comes with the credentials of having
regenerated champions of the caliber of Baggio and Signori, do
you hope in your heart to return to the national team yet?
Corrado (corrado.falesi@tiscalinet.it)
No,
I think it is too late. Buffon has many years ahead of him at
the top.
Pagliuca
I am a Juventus fan, a fan of Peruzzi and so I'm unhappy that
he was sold, but I would like to ask, is Signor Moratti really
as nice and as good as you said last year (remember, though, when
the ship was sinking, he quit as president and left you to be
'pelted with tomatoes', and now that savior Lippi is here, he
is again president, a bit of a pushover)? And then, why Bologna
and not Manchester?
Massimo (informagiovani.racconigi@brainy.it)
Bologna
is my city's team, a place that I know very well and where I
feel great. I preferred to stay in Italy and here I have the
same chance to play in the European cups. Moratti is a very
good person: we had a great relationship even if the last 2-3
months were pretty difficult and I was offended by being left
out. However, this cannot overshadow all the good things that
have gone before.
PAGLIUCA
I am an Inter fan and I am very unhappy that you have left, but
despite that I was disappointed by your last games with Inter.
A real professional should always give everything he's got! Right?
Greetings, however, and good luck with Bologna.
ANGELO V. (FELOMA@EOSTEL.IT)
The
last games with Inter -- above all the playoffs -- did not go
well. It was a serious mistake to play with my knee injured.
I wanted it so much, but it would have been better for everybody
if I had not done it.
What
do you think of Lippi?
Dis. Salsi A (passy@virgilio.it)
Ventola:
'I don¹t know him, I presume he is a very good coach'.
Pagliuca: 'I don't know him; I would be able to talk about him
if he ever coached me, but it has not happened that way. He
has won so many things, I assume that he is good'.
Didn't
you feel a little left out from the Super Inter project by President
Moratti? Good luck from an Inter fan.
ANDREA ()
Ventola:
'No, I wanted to play, so I have chosen to leave Inter'.
Pagliuca: 'It's obvious that I was unhappy about it, very unhappy.
The coach was the one who decided everything and Moratti deferred
to him'.
GREAT
GIANLUCA
Hello Gianluca, I¹ve had only two disappointments in the
time I have been an Inter fan (forever), the first was when Juve
stole the scudetto, the second -- when you were given away. That
was even worse, because we'll certainly win the scudetto, while
it is difficult to imagine that you would again wear Inter's shirt
(unfortunately). I consider you the best goalkeeper in the world,
no one else will ever be able to give us the same emotion that
you gave in these years, I have only gotten the season ticket
yesterday, because I was undecided about doing it (I'm 27 years
old and I've had a season ticket for 15 years). I could not stand
not seeing you between the posts, but my love for INTER has prevailed
this year. I hope you never forget us and when we celebrate the
next scudetto you will have to be with us to celebrate, because
it will be yours as well, for all you have done in these unlucky,
but beautiful years. I wish you further achievements in your career,
even in the National team when they really need somebody they
call you, so don't worry. You are still one of us, Luca Pagliuca.
[The original phrase, 'Salta con noi' is a stadium chant meaning,
literally, 'Jump with us'] Say hello to Nick and Ze. INTER FOREVER
Davide Paganelli (paga72@yahoo.com)
It
is impossible to forget Inter, it will always be in my heart.
The five years here have been wonderful, and even though we
only won one UEFA Cup, I have had some incredible moments. What
happened in the last few months was unfortunate, the Inter journey
could have continued.
I
would like to compliment Pagliuca because when I was at San Siro
(as a fan of Milan), he impressed me. Then I would like to ask
him if he is plotting some sort of revenge against his former
team and if he has any grudge against them. Ettore
Ettore (ettore.segreto@aquila.infn.it)
No
revenge in particular. I only want to do everything to help
Bologna get the best results possible.
Pagliuca
According to you, which player could be the real leader of the
Italian national team in the future? Which team will win the championship?
What kind of future do you see for Francesco Totti on the national
team? Good luck and thank you.
Nicola (nituto@tin.it)
I
will say Buffon, Nesta and Cannavaro. Totti has a great future:
he is young and already on the national team...
How
does a champion of your caliber take landing in a 'minor' team
like Bologna, as a failure or as an opportunity for redemption,
since you will be sure to play all the time?
massimo (errecisnc@iol.it)
Pagliuca:
'It is not a failure. I could go to some big foreign team, but
I have preferred to play in my city¹s team'.
Ventola: 'I repeat, Bologna was my choice and I'm enjoying it
very much. Besides, Bologna is not a minor team, it is in the
UEFA zone!'
Come
back soon!
I am an Inter fan and I was wondering if it was Nicola's own decision
to go to a different team, or if it was a choice that he talked
over with Lippi? However I hope that at Bologna you will be able
to equal (or improve) Recoba's season at Venezia. Good luck and
come back soon!
Josef (Mastro_joe@hotmail.com)
I
have already explained about the choice. I hope to do better
than Recoba at Venezia, maybe even score a few more goals than
he did!
Dear
Gianluca
Pleased to meet you. I am a girl from Japan. I am your fan. I
am asking the questions from Japan. 1. If a Japanese team called
you, would you play in Japan? 2. You have already been to Japan,
right? What do you think of Japan? 3. Are you married already?
4. What kind of food do you like? 5. What is your hobby? 6. Talk
about your aspirations for this championship? I will be your fan
always!!
Akiko Mera (Ithk1000@aol.com)
1.
No, I'm fine here. 2. Do I have to be honest? I prefer Italy.
3. Not yet... 4. Pasta. 5. I have different hobbies, depending
on the situation and time. 6. I already said, we want to do
well. To do as well in the championship and go all the way in
to the final one of the two cups.
pagliuca
How far can Bologna go this year? How do you see your two colleagues,
goalkeepers Roccati and Ferrari?
luca (fisasrl@tin.it)
We've
already talked about Bologna. Both players that you mentioned
have a great future ahead of them, and a good present, also.
Maybe, for the present, Roccati is a little bit more experienced.
FOR PAGLIUCA
According to you, is Peruzzi really better than you, or does
he just agree better with Lippi??? And seeing how Signori won't
be your nemesis anymore, can the great Mboma replace him???
G. (floris@libero.it)
Who's
better between me and Peruzzi? Tha is not for me to say. As
for Mboma, so far he has not been able to score on me, neither
in the World Cup, nor in the championship; I hope it continues
that way.
Greetings
Dear Gianluca and Nicola, I really feel for you if you left Inter
not of your own free will. My question is the following: how do
you feel at Bologna and what do you expect of next season? Hello
from Canada. Clemente.
CLEMENT LEALE (lealec @ moh.gov.on.ca)
Ventola:
'I repeat: I feel fine, there is a nice atmosphere. I will probably
have more room than at Milano, and I hope to score a lot'.
Pagliuca: 'Bologna is my city, I could not feel wrong here.
As for the objectives, we've already talked about them'.
NEXT
VACATION
San Jose 27/07/99 Why don't you put together a nice group and
come to Costa Rica for vacation? My name is Marco and I've lived
in Costa Rica for six years, I'm a tour operator (I have a tour
agency named Happy Tour), we have already helped provide accomodations
for the Italian national veteran team (Rossi, Altobelli, Gentile,
Magrin, Tacconi, Filippi, Fontolan, Marchetti, etc.) and I'd like
to repeat this pleasant experience. I am prepared to offer accomodations,
you would only have to find a plane ticket. Not bad, right? I
would like to organize a game against the local team to benefit
cancer research (in Costa Rica) or the many needy children. I
know perfectly well that the team retreats have begun, but you
never know. Most heartfelt greetings from Marco Orsolato.
MARCO ORSOLATO (happyto@racsa.co.cr)
Sounds
great to us. It is a little too late for this summer because
if we take a vacation now someone might get a little mad. Get
in touch at the end of the season, and we'll talk.
For
Pagliuca
Hello Gianluca, as an Inter fan, I was very unhappy about your
move to Bologna (it was already strong last year, it beat us three
times, now with you in their goal we will be at risk this year
again). I still consider you number one among goalkeepers, even
though at Inter you did not win too many prestigious trophies.
However, we must thank you for what we were able to achieve in
recent years (we had and, perhaps, still have a shaky defense).
I wanted to know why the relationship with Inter was terminated
and why you chose Bologna (even though we know your little slips)
and not an international arena like the one of Manchester United?
(did the English team make you an offer?) In any case, I wish
you a good season ( it's enough that you will lose to Inter; joking!),
hoping to see you in the National team again (even though it will
be difficult, not because of the competition, but for motives
unknown to me.)
Domenico Alicino (Domenico.Alicino@hit.com)
Thank
you for the compliments. I preferred to stay in Italy, and when
the opportunity came up to go to Bologna, I jumped on it immediately.
Manchester United was making moves last year, this year they
did a kind of a survey, and then bought the goalkeeper from
Aston Villa.
PLAYOFF
Inter's whole season was a prolonged UEFA playoff. How is it possible
that you would not be more aggressive and persistent than usual?
ROBERTO (teribili@tin.it)
Pagliuca:
'It is not a question of being aggressive and persistent. Bologna
was in better shape than we were. They believed in themselves
more and played better'.
Ventola: 'Perhaps you are right, but things were falling apart
, and when things start going badly, it is very difficult to
salvage certain situations'.
Hello
Gianluca, I am a huge Inter fan. I am not happy with the last
acquisition campaign by our president. He did not have to send
away a goalkeeper who in the last few years had the best results.
This year I will support Bologna also. YOU ARE AWESOME! How did
you take the news of your transfer?
francesco (stummi@neomedia.it)
I
read about the purchase of Peruzzi in the newspaper. It was
a heavy blow, like being hit in the stomach with a ball.
Pagliuca
e Ventola
Dear Gianluca, welcome back to the shores of Reno! Now that you
have met your Bologna teammates, do you think you¹re with
a competitive team? And then, how do you think Buso will be able
to manage Serie A in his debut? And what about you, do you still
think you are among the strongest goalkeepers, together with Peruzzi,
Buffon and Toldo? Dear Nicola, we wish you the best, we hope Bologna
will be able to have another striker at the top of the championship
goal-scoring list, like in the good times of Beppe Savoldi. How
do you like Bologna? And how do you think the team will do this
year?
Roy & Mauro (Roy918@aol.com)
Pagliuca:
'Certainly, it is a very competitive team with all the right
cards in hand to do well. Buso is very well prepared, he has
impressed me with his meticulousness in taking care of details.
As for the ranking among my colleagues, I can say that I feel
good and that's enough for me; I don't worry about who is the
strongest'.
Ventola: 'Top of the scoring table? That is a very difficult
thing to do, let's say I can try'.
For
Pagliuca
Hello Pagliuca, I read that before becoming a goalkeeper you played
in another position. Did you never think of becoming a goalkeeper,
or did you sometimes play in this position as well? Seeing how
good you are, I think it would be a waste to make you play in
another position... My name is Stefano, I play in goal, too, I'm
not as good as you, even though in mini-soccer I am like a wall!
Impassable.
Stefano (steno@anet.it)
You
are right, when I was little I played as a half-winger with
decent results. However, I was better in goal, so I decided
to change and it has gone pretty well...
To
Pagliuca about basketball.
You are a big fan of Virtus which makes me very glad. Don't you
think that the whistles from the A.Costa grandstand (which has
many ties to Fortitudo [rival basketball team]) came first of
all because of this rivalry? Will you go to the Palazzo often
this year? Who is/are your favorite players of the magic black
V's? Thank you.
Gian Gaetano Ferri (ggferri@med.unibo.it)
As
far as I know, the Andrea Costa grandstand is divided evenly
between fans of Virtus and Fortitudo. Whenever I can, I will
go to the Palazzo more than willingly. My favorite players are
Brunamonti (of the past) and Danilovic (at present).
Ventola
Hello, I am in Australia, so I can¹t get much information
on Italian soccer. Are you just on loan to Bologna or did they
purchase you outright? Will you return to Inter?
Riccardo (raddis@tin.it)
I
am joint property and my fate will be decided only at the end
of the season. With this Nicola and Gianluca say good-bye because
practice is coming up soon. Thanks to all, also to the many
to whose questions we could not respond. See you again at Gazzetta
Online.
